A cold wallet is a device that generates and stores your private keys without an internet connection. Because the keys never touch the network, remote attacks have nothing to target.
Hot wallet vs. cold wallet
Hot wallets — mobile apps, browser extensions or exchange accounts — are convenient, but they live on connected devices. A cold wallet only signs transactions; the key never leaves the chip.
- Exchange: the exchange controls your keys.
- Hot wallet: you control the keys, but they sit on an online device.
- Cold wallet: you control the keys and they stay offline.
When is it worth it?
If you hold more crypto than you’d be willing to lose, or you plan to hold long term, a cold wallet is the most cost-effective security upgrade you can make.
Not your keys, not your coins.
